DAVIE, Fla. -- Buy one truck, get one free. It sounds like a marketing tactic for Payless Shoes -- almost too good to be true.

But at a Dodge dealership in Davie, it's not just a gimmick. It's creative marketing.

"It's real simple," said Ali Ahmed of University Dodge. "If you buy a truck for regular price -- what would normally pay in good economic conditions -- you get a second truck at no additional cost."

But there's a catch. In order to qualify for the promotion, you have to purchase a full-price, 2008 four-door Dodge Ram. The free truck must also be a 2008 model, but a two-door

If you don't want two trucks, the dealership said you can use that money on the down payment.

With U.S. automakers' fate hanging in the balance and dealerships hurting, this Payless-like marketing seems to be working.

University Dodge told Local 10's Janine Stanwood they started with 150 Ram trucks on their lot last month. They're now down to 60.

"You have to be creative," Ahmed said. "Sales are down across the board. We're reaching outside of Florida to keep our numbers up."
