Boy Needs Car To Get Cancer Treatments

Dorymar Miliano is a rich woman, but not in material possessions. She’s rich in love. Every day, her kids shower her with hugs and kisses.

Three-year-old Felix hardly leaves her side.

"After he got sick, I like to be every day with him,” said Miliano. “Every minute I can be with him, I enjoy it with him."

Felix was diagnosed with stomach cancer last October.

After grueling chemotherapy and radiation treatments, he underwent surgery to remove the tumor.

Felix responded well. A few weeks later, he was back to his normal self, which is happy and high-energy. But Miliano knows he's not in the clear. His medical needs are ongoing. She said she worries about him and other things.

One of Felix’s favorite activities is riding his toy car. In real life, Miliano has problems with hers. The 2003 Land Rover gave out almost two years ago. It doesn't even have an engine. Miliano has had to ask for rides to and from work and to and from the hospital. Already Felix has missed three doctors' appointments.

"He still has the stitches, because I missed the appointment to take the stitches off after the surgery," said Miliano.

With a year left of chemotherapy to go, Felix can't afford to miss any more appointments and Miliano can't afford to buy a reliable car. She's a divorced, single mom working part-time as an office manager. Miliano said Felix's dad doesn't pay child support.

Miliano said a car is a lifeline for her son. She came to the Local Ten Care Force for help.

"I've never seen myself in this position before,” said Miliano. “I always work and try to give the best to my kid. I am going to do what I have to do as a mom and give the support to him."

The Jessica June Children’s Cancer Foundation contributed to this story. The nonprofit organization is devoted to alleviating the financial hardships of families with young cancer patients. Care Force has teamed up with JJCCF to help the Miliano family.
