MIAMI -- It took more than 13 hours to reach a decision, but the Miami-Dade County school board has passed a proposal to cut millions of dollars from its budget. As a result, hundreds of jobs will be lost.
The meeting, which began at 1 p.m. Wednesday, ended at about 3:30 a.m. Thursday.
In a 5-4 vote, the board agreed to eliminate an estimated 450 additional jobs, bringing the total number of jobs lost this year in the district to nearly 2,000.
Under a plan that will save an estimated $44 million, 317 central office employees will be let go, and the marketing department will be eliminated. Another 75 physical education teachers will also lose their jobs, as well as 30 teachers' assistants and 28 assistant principals.
Another cost-cutting measure that was passed includes raising the price of school lunches.
Lunches will cost 50 cents more when schools reopen -- $2.25 in elementary schools and $2.50 in middle and high schools. They will still be free to students from low-income families.
Superintendent Rudy Crew said the school district would finish in the red this fiscal year, overspending its budget by about $46 million.
"We will have to dip into the reserve as a way of being able to balance our budget," Crew said.
The elimination of certain transportation services, another amendment that was considered, did not pass. That means 117 bus drivers will keep their jobs.
