MIAMI -- Miami-Dade County School Superintendent Alberto Carvalho asked the school board Wednesday, and they agreed, to sue the state of Florida to recoup approximately $25 million.
At issue is the state funding formula that was amended in July. It affects all the districts, but because of declining property values -- which pay for the local component of school funding -- Miami-Dade county is affected the most.
Because some districts lose millions of dollars more than others, Carvalho called the formula unconstitutional and wants courts to bring the relief that state lawmakers will not.
Carvalho would like to hire outside counsel to handle the lawsuit, which would cost about $400 per hour.
The superintendent feels the $400 per hour fee is worth the fight to recoup $25 million.
