The New York City Opera is going for broke with a new idea for an opera.
The NYCO has commissioned a composer to create an opera based on the "Brokeback Mountain" short story by Annie Proulx.
Proulx's story became the basis for the award-winning 2005 gay cowboy romance starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal.
The film went on to earn Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor for Ledger and Best Supporting Actor for Gyllenhaal, and Oscar wins for Best Director for Ang Lee and Best Adapted Screenplay for Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana.
The "Brokeback Mountain" opera is scheduled to premiere in the spring of 2013.
