MIAMI -- Some of the best places to dine are in the most surprising locations, and a new one in the Upper Eastside is easy to miss -- but if you're smart, you won't.
Alex Richter, who was the developer of Edelweiss, the popular German restaurant on Biscayne Boulevard at 26th Street, has now opened the
Royal Bavarian Schnitzel Haus on 79th Street.
The restaurant (located on the north side of 79th Street just before the causeway bridge) has Richter's unmistakable touch. From the cheerful white lights around the entrance to the
charming interior decor, you will feel welcome the minute you walk in the door.
The food is undoubtedly the best part, but the quaint and artistic decorating adds to the happy surprise you find when you step in off the street. Floral arrangements accent the Bavarian blue and gilded trim. The bar area is cozy but classy. The artwork on the wall is a collection of vintage prints of Bavarian royalty that Richter found at a flea market in Munich.

The restaurant's atmosphere is
cheerful but intimate, seating 40 with more outdoor seating available at bistro tables. Richter (pictured, right) also plans a Biergarten behind the building that will be added soon with, of course,
fine German beers on tap.
The menu is everything you hope for in a fine German restaurant, and more. Recent specials included: lamb with green beans; roast duck with cherries; pork shank with sauerkraut; pistachio crusted mahi mahi; and raspberry cheesecake. Atkin's dieters will love the Schnitzel Haus -- there is a special menu section just for those looking for
low-carb dining.
The
prices are moderate, and the food is delicious. From great appetizers like honey-garlic brie with crusty bread, and escargot with spinach; to traditional German dishes such as sauerbraten, schnitzels, and strudel, you will want to go back again and again.
After seven successful years with Edelweiss, Richter is taking a risk in an up-and-coming neighborhood -- and this restaurant is sure to become one of the highlights of Miami's newly revitalized Upper Eastside.
Whether you are looking for a cozy spot for a mug of beer or a glass of wine; a romantic dinner for two; or a festive family outing, the Royal Bavarian Schnitzel Haus has it all.
Be smart, and be the first to take your friends to this royal taste of
the best of Bavaria.
