CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. -- A few short years ago Rebecca Crea was on her way to becoming a national statistic.
"I was overweight, bordering on the definition of clinically obese," said Crea.
She's not alone. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the national scale is tipping in the wrong direction. If the current trend continues, the CDC estimates 50 percent of Americans could be classified as obese within the next decade.
Some health experts said the key to turning those numbers around comes down to mind-over-matter. Specifically, re-training how we see ourselves and how we think about food.
For Crea, that retraining came through guided hypnosis.
"It was amazing. My whole life just started to change," said Crea. "After the first session, I felt somehow different. It was easy to be active, to eat right, and I wasn't forcing myself, it was just happening."
It may sound hokey, but hypnotherapist Rena Greenberg said it's really pretty simple.
"We're always programming the subconscious mind, whether we call it hypnosis or not, we're always talking to ourselves," said Greenberg.
"What it comes down to is what voices are we listening to."
Through a seven-step process outlined in her new book "The Craving Cure," Greenberg shows people how to stop sabotaging themselves with faulty thinking.
"That becomes the basis of reprogramming the mind, then we can start planting positive connections to healthy food and exercise."
For those who are willing to commit to the effort, Greenberg said the reward can be lasting weight loss.
"Many of my clients have lost a hundred pounds or more and kept it off," said Greenberg.
Crea is proud that after years of yo-yo dieting, she's managed to lose 35 pounds and maintain that weight loss for 5 years.
"This changed my life. It's made me a whole person again," she said.
Greenberg hosts seminars at hospitals around Florida.
