Self-Control
Lawrence Leung, 24, a weight lifter and self-confessed fitness junkie, said he has never eaten a 100-calorie snack pack and has no plans to.He believes the packs work only for those with portion-control issues. But, he said, that is the majority of Americans."Most people don't have self-control," he said. "The problem is only getting worse."He would never call the pre-portioned bags healthy, either. Just because they are better than eating the full-sized variety and often come baked and with less fat, Leung said, they shouldn't be considered a good choice."They are a tolerable alternative to a full size product," he said.Marquette also said they might work for those with poor eating habits as a way to curb overeating."For someone who normally eats a whole box and is trying to get better at it, it is a step in right direction," she said. "It helps them get a visual on just how little 100 calories is."Marquette, who teaches nutrition at the University of Bridgeport, said one of the biggest problems with the snack packs are that people don't just stop at one pack."People start thinking, 'It's OK; it's only 100 calories,'" she said. "All of a sudden, they are consuming 300 to 400 calories a day from these snacks."Trudeau said he is definitely guilty of that. "One time I had four bags for dinner. I was tired and didn't feel like cooking, so I figured eating a few of those wouldn't be a bad thing, since they are low in fat," he said.Marquette said while those foods may be low in fat, they are high in carbohydrates and sugar, often leaving you hungry for more 30 minutes later. And stocking up on those carbs will affect your waistline even more if you are not active."Carbs give your body the ability to produce energy, which is great," she said. "But if you are sitting at your desk all day, that energy won't be burned off and will be stored as fat."Make Your Own
Marquette had a few recommendations of things to eat instead of the snack packs. They may be a little more or less than 100 calories, but Marquette said it doesn't matter."You don't have to stop at 100 calories for a snack if you are eating the right things," she said. "You can go over on carrots and fruit without worrying."Besides, she said, eating these healthy snacks will keep you full longer.Copyright 2008, Internet Broadcasting.
