FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- When it comes to foundation, women are going mad over mineral powder makeup. Loose or pressed, there's no shortage of products to pick from.
"Now everybody and their brother has their version," said cosmetic consumers advocate Paula Begoun.
For over two decades, Begoun has researched and written about almost every cosmetic product on the market and published that information in her best selling books, "Don't Go To The Cosmetic Counter Without Me" and "Don't Go Shopping For Hair-Care Products Without Me."
Begoun's latest report on mineral makeup cuts through the claims.
"The claims are just so out of this world, it's a miracle that women buy and believe it, because mostly it's nonsense," Begoun told Local 10.
Many claim that mineral make up is good for the skin and that a person can actually sleep in it.
"It's absurd to sleep in any make-up and there's nothing beneficial in these products as far as treating skin conditions," Begoun asserted.
Also, many mineral makeups claim to be "all natural."
"The ingredient most of them use is bismuth oxycloride, and mismuth oxycloride is about as natural as polyester," said Begoun.
On the plus side, mineral makeup can be easy to apply and those that carry SPF ratings can also offer an extra layer of protection over sunscreen.
"Also, many of the mineral powder foundations we looked at have very nice color ranges," Begoun added. "Some do contain mica, which adds a level of shine and that may not look good on everyone."
That means, like any foundation, finding the right one takes a bit of trial and error. Begoun said to buy the one that looks good on the purchaser and not to buy into the hype.
