Coconut Creek, Fla, -- It's estimated that as many as 10 million women and a million men in the U.S. are battling an eating disorder.
While many who suffer from anorexia, bulimia or compulsive over-eating hide from the shame of their condition, those who seek treatment are benefiting from the use of art therapy.
"Most people with eating disorders are dealing with something that's very insidious," said Karen Polin, an art therapist at the Renfrew Center in Florida.
"They often are too afraid to express things in words, or simply can't find the words to express their feelings. Art therapy can get through the barriers that words build up," Polin added.
"I started to realize what I'd been hiding and what I really felt through my art," said 20-year Chessie, who's battling anorexia. "The process of doing this is so relaxing and it's the first time I've enjoyed the process and not just looked toward the end product."
Jess, 15, who became anorexic at age 13, says the art work has allowed her the reveal the true nature of her eating disorder.
"My parents were alcoholics and I was abused as a child," she told us. "I felt so full of guilt and shame there was no room for food."
Jess is now making peace with her past, and learning to accept herself. "I'm not going to say I have a normal relationship with food yet but it's definitely getting there."
If you would like to see some of the artwork, 35 pieces will be on display at the Coral Springs Museum of Art through June 16, 2008.
"We hope this raises awareness about the problem of eating disorders," said Polin. "There are so many more people out there who need help."
