WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- According to statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery, the number of cosmetic procedures performed in the U.S. has increased more than 80 percent since 2000.
Now more and more companies are creating at-home versions of popular in-office treatments.
"As technology expands devices are shrinking and that makes everything from laser hair removal to blemish treatments possible in the privacy of your own bathroom," said Dr. Kenneth Beer, a West Palm Beach dermatologist.
One of the newest devices on the market is the Tria, the first at-home product featuring a diode laser.
The hand-held device, which costs just under $1000, is designed to remove hair from the body and carries specific warnings about not being used around the neck or face.
"The Tria is great for removing a few dense hairs at a time from the body," said Beer. "It shouldn't be used on deeply tanned or dark skin because it could cause damage."
Beer said the Clarisonic Skin Care Brush is another good at-home beauty device, which costs about $200.
"This electronic brush is much more effective at cleaning the skin than just washing by hand," Beer said.
For those who suffer from skin break-outs, Beer said the Zeno Acne Clearing device may help.
"The Zeno uses a small amount of heat to treat pimples," Beer said. "I wouldn't recommend it for widespread cystic acne, but for a few blemishes here and there it's fine."
The Zeno is priced at $150.
Last but not least, there are a variety of devices that claim to grow scalp hair ranging in price from $150 to over $500.
"These work on the principle of cool-light energy, or L.E.D.," Beer said. "The theory is this light is supposed to stimulate hair cells," he added.
But Beer is skeptical about the benefits. "I'd say the jury is still out on this one as far as efficacy but it certainly is safe to use."
The Tria device is available only through doctors offices.
The Laser Hair Comb, Zeno Acne Clearing Device and Clarisonic Skin Care Brush are available at select stores and on the Internet.
