MIAMI -- Feeling tired, bloated, uninterested in life?
You may be suffering from a condition called "adrenal fatigue," which experts say can impact anyone at any age.
"I never heard of it until I started doing some research," said Joan Andre.
Andre said she'd always been active and happy until she reached her late 40s.
"Then I just lost my luster for life, it was scary," Andre said.
A relative suggested Andre seek out the advice of Dr. Michael Lee, a specialist with BodyLogic M.D.
"She was a classic case of adrenal fatigue, which happens when the adrenal glands are overworked," Lee said.
Lee said the adrenals, which are tiny glands above the kidneys, can become taxed when the body is under chronic stress for a long period of time.
"When the body is stressed excess cortisol is dumped into the blood and that affects the adrenals," said Lee.
Symptoms include acne, food cravings, depression, feeling tired despite hours of sleep, insomnia, hair loss, and weight gain.
Treating adrenal fatigue involves reducing stress, improving diet and nutrition and sometimes utilizing hormone therapy.
"We do saliva testing through out the day to determine if a patient has adrenal fatigue or excess cortisol and then we design a treatment plan," said Lee.
Since undergoing therapy Joan Andre says her life has changed dramatically.
"I just feel great again, it's truly wonderful," she said.
