DAVIE, Fla. -- Three students at Indian Ridge Middle School in Davie are being treated for swine flu, Broward County school officials confirmed Friday.
The students are under a doctor's care and are recuperating at home.
A letter was sent home to parents Thursday afternoon. In the letter, school officials stressed the importance of hand washing and covering a sneeze or cough to help prevent the spread of the virus.
"We are asking that any staff or students that exhibit cold- or flu-like symptoms remain home and seek a doctor's care," the letter said.
Parent Will Mena said he did not receive the letter but heard about the swine flu cases from a neighbor. After hearing the news, he pulled his six children out of school.
"If you look at my kids' noses and you see how they look, they are starting to get sick," Mena said.
Although Mena is concerned, the school district has a swine flu plan in place. The first part was sending the letter to parents. Along with the letter comes a complete cleaning of the commonly touched surfaces at the campus.
Once a child or staff member is reported sick, he or she is moved to a separate room. If cases get worse, staff members will notify health officials and other school administrators.
