MIAMI -- Dozens of nurses from Jackson Memorial Hospital held a rally Friday in an effort to stop proposed cuts that would eliminate thousands of jobs and close two hospitals.
The employees were part of S.E.I.U., the union that represents thousands of nurses.
"We are a family," Maria Vinat told Local 10's Terrell Forney. Vinat has worked for Jackson for 29 years. "We're not going down without a fight," she said.
Nearly 4,500 jobs are on the line as Jackson struggles to close a $230 million budget deficit. Dr. Eneida Roldan, the hospital's CEO, has proposed the job cuts and closing Jackson's north and South nacilities to save cash. However, the proposals are not set in stone.
Earlier this week, Roldan traveled to Tallahassee in an effort to secure roughly $78 million in state funds. State legislatures listened to Jackson's dire needs but in the end, Roldan returned home empty-handed. The state cited its own budget crisis as a major reason for denying her request.
Roldan has since written a formal request to Miami-Dade County commissioners for an
advance of $80 million.
Commissioners plan to discuss the idea at next week's commission meeting. The county was due to pay Jackson the cash later in the fiscal year.
