FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- An undercover narcotics operation ended with the arrest of a Holy Cross Hospital anesthesiologist Thursday night.
According to Fort Lauderdale police, 55-year-old Dr. John Habib, a contract worker for the hospital, was arrested at his home after he tried to buy 35 grams of crystal methamphetamine from an undercover officer.
Police said they have been watching Habib for weeks, trying to collect enough evidence to arrest him. According to police, officers obtained a search warrant and later searched Habib's Fort Lauderdale home and found more methamphetamine and GHB, a club drug meth addicts use to come down from their high.
Habib was charged with trafficking and possession of methamphetamine, and possession of GHB.
The Department of Health was notified of Habib's arrest.
The hospital has not said whether Habib will be fired. On Friday morning, Holy Cross Hospital issued the following statement:
"The Holy Cross Hospital community is saddened by the reports about the personal activities of Dr. John Habib, who is a member of the group that provides contracted anesthesia services to the Hospital. The Hospital is committed to the care and safety of its patients and will take any actions required."
Habib, who has been a practicing physician for 19 years, is expected to post a $100,000 bond.
