MIAMI -- A low-level laser device is being touted as a possible new hope for those with thinning hair.

David Michaels invented the Hairmax, a take-home version of a device used for years in Australia.
Dr. Glenn Charles, a cosmetic surgeon who specializes in hair restoration, has been running one of the clinic trials.
Charles said, "It promotes blood supply. It dilates blood vessels. It brings more blood supply to the scalp."
Channel 10 Consumer Problem Solver Mark Schumacher tried the device and said he couldn't feel anything, but Michaels says that some people say they feel some warming.
To use Hairmax you are supposed to slowly drag the comb through your scalp for about ten minutes twice a week.
Charles checked one patient who's been using the comb for about two months and trichologist Carolyn Veroni, a hair growth specialist, took a video snapshot of the patient's scalp, for a hair count.
In this one case the patient's hair count was up 50 percent.
Schumacher says, "There a couple of things we should mention right here. Like a lot of processes that thicken hair, once you start using the laser comb you'll need to use it forever, because when you stop, your hair will go back to where it was before."
It also costs $650, pricey, but it compares favorably to other "continual" treatments like Propecia, which can cost $60 a month. The Hairmax is a one time cost.
In the next two month, the FDA will rule whether the Hairmax in fact does restore hair to be able to carry that label.
Even though you can buy the Hairmax right now as a "cosmetic device," we recommend that before you fork out money for it you wait till it passes the FDA test.
