Procedure Reduces Breasts Without Pain, Scars

Traditional Breast-Reduction Surgery Leaves Scars

UPDATED: 4:20 pm EST January 9, 2004

Breast-reduction surgery is the solution for severe back and shoulder pain caused by large breasts. However, the procedure can leave scars, and the recovery period is lengthy.

Now, there is an alternative that can reduce breast proportion without pain or scars.

Mallory Conklin, 18, no longer has to deal with the unwanted stares. For years, she thought she would have to live with her overportioned breasts.

"All the women in my family are pretty well-endowed," Conklin said.

Conklin used to wear an E-cup bra and realized the problem could get worse when starting a family.

"I was concerned about breast-feeding my children when I have children," Conklin said.

Dr. Yardy Tse, a plastic surgeon, said, "If somebody is that heavily endowed at a young age, usually they are only going to get larger as they get older."

Conklin did not want a traditional breast reduction, which requires extensive surgery. Tse explained that a traditional breast-reduction surgery will leave a scar around the breast that looks like an anchor.

Instead, Conklin, (pictured, right), opted for a new procedure. Tse used breast liposculpture -- a new technique used to reduce breast size.

"The big advantage with liposculture of the breasts is first of all the scars are minimal to none," Tse said.

During a two-hour procedure, excess fat and breast tissue is liposuctioned. Only two small incisions are made, which enable patients to recover quickly.

"With breast liposculpture, your recovery period is virtually a weekend," Tse said.

As part of a clinical study, Tse used a skin-tightening technique called thermage following breast liposculture.

"We are trying to see if the thermage treatment or the thermacool treatment will cause skin and the tissue to tighten even more and get even more lift in the breast," Tse explained.

Patients like Conklin see a reduction of two cup sizes.

"I feel great. I never have back problems. My bra straps aren't killing me," Conklin said.

Conklin's new figure is giving her a whole new outlook.

"My clothes fit. I have more confidence. I don't worry about the wrong people looking at me for the wrong reason," Conklin said.
