Choosing A Pool Contractor

Tess Langfus, Contributing Writer

If you choose to build an in-ground pool, plan ahead -- getting on a builder's list can be difficult.

With homeowners' interest at a peak in the spring, many builders open their season with nearly a full slate. Because inclement weather can further delay jobs, it's best to inquire with companies six months to a year in advance or have the pool installed in the fall when the demand is lower.

And in cold climates, heavy equipment cannot be transported in the spring until road restrictions are lifted, so pool companies must wait to begin construction until early to mid May. Construction can continue through October and sometimes into November.

Consumers needing guidance on the type of pool and equipment to purchase or to verify the reputation of a pool construction company can contact the National Spa & Pool Institute at www.nspi.org. While the organization has no legal power, NSPI is the "guiding light organization for pool builders," said Hilary Berczyk, president of the Minnesota chapter of the NSPI.

NSPI members commit to a strict code of ethics regarding pool installation and safety regulations. The Web site also offers consumers information on such things as pool safety, use and maintenance.

Finally, Berczyk recommends contacting at least two or three contactors for bids, but cautions that the same size pool can have a $10,000 price spread depending on its quality and accompanying maintenance products. Most in-ground diving pools start around $21,000, but the cost of installing a pool can increase depending on the property's elevation, type of soil and underground water.
