Nolasco Shoots For Fifth Straight Win In Arizona

(Sports Network) - The Florida Marlins' offense put up runs at a prodigious clip in Thursday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The way Ricky Nolasco has been pitching lately, such an outburst probably won't be necessary.

Nolasco puts a four-start win streak on the line when he takes the mound for the Marlins in tonight's clash with the Diamondbacks, who will send out ace Dan Haren in a marquee pitching matchup.

A 15-game winner for Florida during a breakthrough 2008 campaign, Nolasco had been sent to the minors in late May after surrendering a whopping 46 runs (44 earned) in 43 2/3 innings over a nine-start span. He's returned from that demotion with a vengeance, as the talented righty has gone 4-1 with a spectacular 1.54 earned run average in six starts since rejoining the Marlins on June 7.

The 26-year-old has been especially dominant during his winning streak, which he extended by racking up 12 strikeouts over eight shutout innings to defeat Pittsburgh on Sunday. In those four starts, Nolasco has permitted only five runs -- three earned -- and 15 hits while striking out 32 batters over a combined 28 innings of work.

Nolasco has also excelled in past matchups with the Marlins, having earned the victory in all four of his career starts against Florida and producing a 2.12 ERA over that strong stretch.

While Nolasco will be attempting to maintain his recent form, Haren gets one final opportunity to state his case for a starting berth in the upcoming All- Star Game.

Haren secured a spot on the NL squad for the Midsummer Classic, to be held Tuesday at St. Louis' Busch Stadium, with a sensational first half for the disappointing Diamondbacks. The standout right-hander tops the Senior Circuit with a 2.16 ERA and also ranks among the league leaders with 119 strikeouts to go along with an 8-5 record. He's yielded two earned runs or fewer in each of his last eight mound trips.

The 28-year-old improved to 4-1 over his past five starts after holding Colorado to three runs -- one earned -- in a six-inning stint at Coors Field this past Sunday.

Haren, who also boasts a 1.95 ERA in eight Chase Field starts this season and has limited opposing hitters to a .167 average at home, received his third straight All-Star nod and second as a member of the Diamondbacks. He started for the American League in the 2007 All-Star Game held in San Francisco while a member of the Oakland Athletics.

He'll be seeking his first career victory over Florida tonight, having gone 0-2 with a 4.19 ERA in three previous clashes with the Marlins.

Haren will be taking on a Florida squad that set a franchise record with a 10- run eighth inning that lifted the Marlins to a wild 14-7 victory in Thursday's opener of this four-game series. Florida, which trailed 7-0 after five innings, also tied a mark for the greatest deficit overcome in team history.

Brett Carroll had the biggest blow of the night, a pinch-hit three-run homer in the eighth that gave the Marlins an 8-7 lead. Florida would score six more times in the frame, with Dan Uggla, Cody Ross and Jeremy Hermida each contributing RBI singles and John Baker delivering a run-scoring double.

Hermida had a solo homer earlier in the game and finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored. Jorge Cantu added a two-run shot, one of 17 hits for the Marlins on the night.

Arizona had a season-high five-game winning streak halted and blew its largest lead ever in a single game. Scott Schoeneweis (1-1) received the loss after serving up Carroll's go-ahead homer, while Blaine Boyer was tagged for five runs (2 earned) and four hits during the fateful eighth inning.

"The wheels came off in the eighth," said Arizona manager A.J. Hinch. "It quickly became a game where we were in control to a disastrous one at the end. I can't pinpoint when we had that feeling, but it's certainly disappointing."

Justin Upton had three hits, including a two-run homer, for the Diamondbacks, with Chris Young driving in three runs in a losing cause.

The Marlins took two of three games from Arizona last August in their most recent visit to Phoenix, but the Diamondbacks won three of four bouts between the teams in Miami from May 19-21.
