PONTIAC, Mich. -- Even the dead can't escape foreclosure in suburban Detroit.
Five bodies and the cremated remains of 22 people have been removed from the House of Burns Memorial Chapel, a funeral home in Pontiac, after the owner of the home was hit with foreclosure.
The funeral home's fixtures and belongings were put out into the parking lot of the business on Friday morning, WDIV-TV in Detroit reported.
A court-ordered eviction notice dated Jan. 9, 2008, was posted on the door.
This shows the eviction, which was coordinated by 50th District Court in Pontiac, has been in the works for months.
The medical examiner's administrator said he made plans to get the remains after being warned Thursday that a court-ordered eviction would occur after midnight.
The remains were delivered to the Oakland County medical examiner's office for storage early Friday. The administrator said some of the cremated remains date to the 1990s.
Families of the deceased should call the medical examiner's office at 248-858-5099 to make arrangements.
Several family and friends of the owner showed up early Friday to help remove the business property from the parking lot, including several caskets, furniture and other fixtures.
One friend, Pastor Antonio Gibson of the New Experience Church in Pontiac, was critical of the eviction, which happened in the middle of the night.
Gibson said Burns provided funeral services at reasonable costs. He also said this is a sign of the tough economic times in Michigan as well as nationally.
The owner has not spoken about the incident.
