HOLLYWOOD, Fla. -- The recycling program in a South Florida city is getting a lot of attention.
In February, the City of Hollywood launched the RecycleBank Rewards Program. The program rewards residents who recycle by giving them discounts to over 40 local and national stores, like Publix, Winn Dixie and Target
“Everyone is recycling," resident Magalita French told Local 10's Victor Oquendo. "I think it’s excellent.”
The process is simple.
Each recycling bin has its own identification tag. The recycling truck reads the tag and weighs the bin. That information is sent to the RecycleBank Web site and the corresponding account receives the points.
The program attracted more than 11,000 customers in its first month. That lead to an 85 percent increase in recycling from this time last year.
The residents of Hollywood aren’t the only ones seeing the benefits of the new program. The city is saving money too.
It costs $98 to get rid of one ton of trash, but the city receives $58 for every ton of recycled goods.
City officials said it's a win-win situation and more people are signing up for the program every day.
The City of North Miami is also part of the rewards program.
Other cities will hopefully follow.
