FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Former Major League Baseball player Jim Leyritz will remain in jail until at least Monday, when a judge will decide if he will remain behind bars until his DUI manslaughter trial in September.
Leyritz had been free on pretrial release until he was arrested on July 2 on domestic violence charges. He is being held in jail again for violating the pretrial release conditions.
Leyritz was arrested last week when his ex-wife, with whom he lives, called 911 and claimed he hit her during an argument.
Karri Leyritz had been living with her ex-husband since February for financial reasons. In court Thursday, she said he hit her after she forged a $482 check on his account.
"Jim was mad I wrote a check out of his account. He hadn't paid child support in nine months," Karri Leyritz said.
Jim Leyritz denied the allegations.
Davie police Officer Edward Suarez said he saw dried blood running down Karri Leyritz's cheek when he arrived at their home following the argument. The officer said that Karri Leyritz also had a small laceration by her eye.
Davie police officers testified that Karri Leyritz smelled of alcohol that night. She said she drank a bottle of wine before the incident.
The last witness to take the stand Thursday said she was a mutual friend of the couple. The woman testified that she often heard Karri Leyritz threatening to send her ex-husband back to jail if he made her angry.
Judge Marc Gold needed more time to decide whether to release Jim Leyritz again before his trial, and he continued the hearing to Monday. Jim Leyritz cried when he realized he would be spending another weekend in jail.
Jim Leyritz is not expected to testify in the hearing.
The DUI manslaughter case stems from a fatal car crash in December 2007. Police said Jim Leyritz had left a bar late at night after celebrating his birthday when his vehicle collided with another, killing the other driver, Freida Ann Veitch. The trial in that case is scheduled to begin Sept. 14.
Jim Leyritz played for six teams in 11 seasons in the majors. He hit a memorable home run in the 1996 World Series to help the New York Yankees win Game 4 against Atlanta.
