POSTED: Friday, October 28, 2005

Phoenix secures Barbosa, Diaw through '06-07 season

The Phoenix Suns exercised the fourth-year option on the rookie contracts of both Leandro Barbosa and Boris Diaw, locking the young prospects up through at least the 2006-07 season.

"Leandro Barbosa and Boris Diaw are two very exciting and talented young players," said Suns president and general manager Bryan Colangelo. "We look forward to their continued development and contributions."

Barbosa, who was traded to the Suns after San Antonio selected him 28th overall in the 2003 draft, has averaged 7.5 points and 2.2 assists in two seasons with Phoenix. The 6-3 guard helped his native Brazil claim a gold medal in the 2005 FIBA Americas Championship this past summer, and was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 20.3 points per game.

Diaw was acquired as part of the sign-and-trade deal that sent Joe Johnson to Atlanta in August. The 23 year-old swingman has averaged 4.6 points and 3.6 rebounds in two years with the Hawks.
