BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. -- A Broward Sheriff's Office K-9 died Wednesday when the air conditioner in the cruiser in which he was left stopped working.
BSO said that the dog, named Astro, and his deputy handler were taking part in training exercises at Port Everglades.
The deputy said that he left the dog in the cruiser with the engine running and the air conditioning turned on. When he returned to the car it was overheating and smoking.
Fire-rescue personnel were also participating in the training, and they immediately tried to resuscitate the dog. Astro was rushed to a Hollywood Animal Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Bomb Squad Det. Robert Connors, an eight-year BSO veteran, had been working with Astro for five years.
Detectives are trying to determine what caused the Ford Crown Victoria to overheat and the alarm system to malfunction.
BSO said that a memorial will be planned for Astro at a later date.
