Generator Thefts Lead To Warning
Several Generators Stolen In One Neighborhood
POSTED: Thursday, December 28, 2006
OAKLAND PARK, Fla. -- Broward Sheriff's Office Oakland Park detectives are warning residents to be on the lookout for thieves who have stolen several generators from the same neighborhood.
Detectives said that during the past three weeks, there have been numerous reports of generators being stolen from homes in the North Andrews Gardens area. BSO detectives believe the thefts are occurring in the early-morning hours between approximately 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. The thieves are stealing the generators from the homeowners' vehicles, carports and backyard sheds. After discovering that their generators were stolen, several victims told deputies that they remembered hearing unusual noises or their dogs barking excessively, but didn't think anything of it at the time.
BSO investigators, along with members of the Citizens Observer Patrol, several homeowners associations and high school students fulfilling community service hours, will blanket the North Andrews Gardens neighborhood passing out fliers in order to warn residents about the generator thefts and how not to become a victim. The anti-crime alert fliers will be distributed throughout the neighborhood on Thursday, Dec. 28 starting at 10 a.m.
BSO detectives are urging residents to secure their valuables at all times and to report any suspicious noises or people immediately by calling the BSO Oakland Park District at 954-561-6161.
