I-NEWS ONLY: Local Officers Honored For Bravery

POSTED: Tuesday, January 16, 2007

For Bal Harbour police Sgt. Leo Quinn and Officer Ray Fernandez, Dec. 30 of last year was just another night on the job.

But around midnight, Quinn and Fernandez were dispatched to a 911 call at a nearby Bal Harbour Condominium that would prove memorable.

When the duo arrived at the Tiffany Condominium, they encountered a third-floor unit on fire.

Quinn and Fernandez were the first emergency responders to arrive and with the fire department still en route, the officers knew it was up to them to rescue anyone trapped inside.

Their instincts proved life-saving.

Once inside the burning condo, Quinn and Fernandez found a man, barely conscious, sitting in the living room.

Arvid Weinstein, the owner of the condo, kept saying, "My wife, my wife."

By that time, officers from neighboring Surfside had arrived, along with fire fighters.

Officer Joe Schaefer of the Surfside Police Department went back inside the smoky residence and was able to locate Weinstein's wife, who was barely conscious, lying near the bedroom.

The Weinsteins were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Burn Center and were treated and released.

The officers were treated for smoke inhalation but were ok.

Their call to duty that December night prompted the Miami-Dade County Association of Police Chiefs to honor the three officers with a plaque for Police Officer of the Month.

Reporter Alex Alvarez spoke with Quinn and Fernandez about that night and getting the award at the Bal Harbour Village Council Meeting Tuesday morning.
