I-NEWS ONLY: Hundreds Prepare To Ride For HIV
SMART Ride Gets Into Gear Friday Morning
POSTED: Thursday, March 29, 2007
MIAMI -- Riding a bicycle from the Village of Pinecrest to the Southern most tip of Florida can be hard on one's body.
But the physical strain resulting from the 165 mile trek to Key West is well worth it for the hundreds of bikers who do it once a year.
That's because 100 percent of the cash raised from the two-day bike ride known as "SMART Ride," goes to help South Floridians living with HIV.
The ride got into gear four years ago when Glen Weinzimer decided that he wanted to start an annual fundraising event, where 100 percent of the profits would go to local organizations helping people living with HIV.
For the inaugural ride, Weinzimer managed to get 200 people to go with him and by the third year, both the number of participants and money raised, doubled.
Weinzimer said "SMART Ride" has donated nearly $170,000 to six direct service organizations in Florida.
But Weinzimer and the rest of the riders are preparing for the ride of their lives, expecting to raise $500,000 from this ride alone.
Weinzimer said the words of Margaret Mead describe it best: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world indeed; it's the only thing that ever has."
"SMART Ride 4" departs from MoringStar Renewal Center in Pinecrest at 6:30 Friday morning.
Digital Correspondent Alex Alvarez spoke with Weinzimer and rider Keith Willard, who learned he was HIV-positive just as Weinzimer asked him to join the initial "SMART Ride."
