WPLG Editorial: Paroled Sex Offenders Need Place To Live (3/31/07)
Answer May Be To Provide Special Shelters
POSTED: Thursday, April 5, 2007
Remember when lawmakers moved quickly to keep sexual offenders out of our neighborhoods?
Local 10 thinks a crucial question goes unanswered. Where may they live?
This week, Local 10 found probation officers checking on paroled sexual offenders sleeping in public, under a bridge on the Julia Tuttle Causeway.
After their release from jail they were ordered there by the courts, as a last resort. Parolees who can afford rent must not live near schools, parks or playgrounds. Homeless shelters will not take them.
They've served their time and they need somewhere to go. That somewhere has to be safe for them and secure for the rest of us. Maybe special shelters for paroled sex offenders is the answer. Living in public is not.
That's our take on things. Let us know what you think.
