Man Uses Tractor-Trailer To Steal Night Deposit Box

Police Say Man Led Officers On Chase, Injuring 3 During Incident

POSTED: Tuesday, April 17, 2007

Police said a man used an 18-wheel tractor-trailer to remove a night deposit box from a bank.

Fort Lauderdale police said officers were dispatched to a burglary alarm call from a Wachovia Bank located at 1700 W. Commercial Blvd. on Monday at 4 a.m. When officers arrived, they saw that the night deposit box had been removed from the building's wall and there was an 18-wheel Kenworth tractor-trailer in the bank parking lot.

Upon sight of the police, a man inside the tractor-trailer drove off, leaving the night deposit box behind, according to police. Officers engaged in a short pursuit as the tractor-trailer exited Davie Boulevard from Interstate 95.

Police said the driver of the tractor-trailer entered an apartment complex at 2115 W. Davie Blvd. and, at one point, struck an officer in his patrol car. Police said the officer was taken to Broward General Medical Center.

After striking the officer, the driver of the tractor-trailer exited the vehicle and ran off, police said. Officers gave chase and the man punched another officer several times, resulting in a black eye, according to police.

Police said William F. Targett was eventually subdued by a Taser gun and taken into custody. Police said a third officer also suffered minor injuries while trying to apprehend Targett.

Targett, 36, is charged with attempted murder on a law enforcement officer, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with and without violence, and first-degree burglary.
