Thieves Net $750,000 Worth Of Cell Phones

Owner Says Security Guard Didn't Know Theft Was Taking Place

POSTED: Tuesday, May 1, 2007

The owner of a wireless telephone store said he is angry and frustrated after thieves got away with about $750,000 worth of cell phones while the security guard posted outside failed to notice the heist.

Danny Kaufman said thieves used a blowtorch to cut a hole through a garage door at Reagan Wireless, located at 3390 S.W. 15th St., and used a forklift to haul away multiple pallets containing about 6,000 unopened boxes of cell phones about 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

"When I saw all the pallets missing and that little hole, I knew that he had to spend at least four to six hours here - minimum - while I have a 24-hour security guard," Kaufman said.

Kaufman said the alarm was triggered and the security monitoring system provider contacted the armed security guard on duty three different times to make sure everything was OK.

Surveillance video shows a guard leaving his post about 10 minutes before the alarm was triggered and his relief washing his vehicle upon arrival, apparently unaware of the burglary in progress.

Navarro Security, a company owned and operated by former Broward County Sheriff Nick Navarro, employed the guard. Navarro Security declined to comment.

Kaufman said he believes the heist was an inside job. He has fired several employees and terminated his contract with Navarro Security.

In the meantime, Kaufman is out thousands of dollars and the thieves remain on the loose. The Broward Sheriff's Office is investigating.
