A U.S. Coast Guard cutter turned over more than 4,000 pounds of cocaine to federal agents in Key West after seizing it from a fishing vessel 144 miles northeast of Honduras.

The helicopter crew of the Jacksonville-based Coast Guard Helicopter Interdiction Tactical Squadron (HITRON) first spotted the vessel. Law enforcement from Tahoma then conducted a search of the fishing boat, according to Coast Guard officials.

The Coast Guard said it found two hidden compartments filled with 95 bales of cocaine worth an estimated street value of $61.5 million.

The eight suspected smugglers were transferred to federal agents. The ship was searched on April 25, officials said.
