Pair Of Gators Caught In Miami Springs Canal

Gators Corralled Near Ludlum, Ibis Avenues

POSTED: Monday, June 11, 2007
UPDATED: 4:09 pm EDT June 11, 2007

Two alligators were corralled Monday morning from a Miami Springs canal.

Miami Springs police officers and alligator trapper Todd Hardwick were called to the canal near Ludlum and Ibis avenues after receiving numerous complaints from nearby residents. The canal is mere feet from homes in the area.

The gators were about 9 and 5 feet long. One gator weighed about 200 pounds while the other weighed about 60 pounds.

"Unfortunately, as we continue to develop and destroy wetlands and encroach on alligator habitat, these conflicts will continue," Hardwick said. "Anytime you've got alligators over 8 feet, they are likely to consume your dog."

Since the gators were larger than 4 feet long, they will be killed and their skin will be used.
