Sky 10 was over the scene as Broward Sheriff's Office deputies struggled with a crowd that had gathered at the scene of the Fort Lauderdale shooting at Northwest 14th Street and Northwest Eighth Avenue.

The shooting occurred Thursday when BSO deputies tried to serve an arrest warrant to a man wanted in connection with a first-degree murder charge, Local 10 reported.

Broward Sheriff's Office deputies and homicide detectives were searching for Michael Lee Taylor, 19, who they said they believed murdered one man and injured another during a June 9 shootout in unincorporated Central Broward County.

At about 11:37 a.m., BSO said that detectives walked up to the home of one of Taylor's relatives. It was then, deputies said, Taylor drove up in a stolen pickup truck, got out of the truck holding a handgun, and opened fire on deputies.

BSO deputies returned fire, striking Taylor, said BSO.

Taylor was taken to Broward General Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. No one else was injured in the shooting, BSO said.

The Fort Lauderdale Police Department is conducting the investigation into the shooting since it took place within the city limits; however no Ft. Lauderdale police personnel were involved in the shooting, according to BSO. They are also investigating the melee between deputies and bystanders, Local 10 reported. As is the standard procedure, the deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave.

BSO said Taylor has an arrest record dating back to at least 1999 on charges of possession of explosives, battery on law enforcement, burglary, grand theft, parole violation, and more. In July 2006, the Florida Department of Corrections placed Taylor on felony probation for three years, officials said.

Rocks, Bottles Thrown, Police Say

Following the shooting, a crowd that had gathered began throwing rocks and bottles at deputies, according to BSO. Two people were arrested at the scene. Both arrests were for battery on a law enforcement officer as well as resisting arrest with violence, according to BSO.

One deputy was treated at the scene after being hit in the face with a bottle. Another deputy suffered minor injuries after being knocked to the ground and kicked, investigators said.

One of the people arrested was charged with attempting to escape. After being taken to Broward General, he became violent with a deputy, tried to escape and spit on the deputy once he was taken out of the car, according to BSO.

Several members of law enforcement were also sprayed with a garden hose on the scene.
