WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- A fight between two teenage South Florida girls drew national criticism this week after the brawl was posted on the video-sharing Web site YouTube.
According to police, 16-year-old Rachel Kalfin was walking home last week in West Palm Beach when a car pulled up beside her on the street. Police said Rachel Alter jumped out of the car and began attacking Kalfin with brass knuckles.
"I didn't even know what was going on. I didn't even know she hit me," Kalfin told WPBF-TV in West Palm Beach.
The beating was caught on tape and later posted by an unknown individual on YouTube. The clip was removed from the video sharing Web site by the poster earlier this week but drew a national audience when it was played Wednesday on cable news channel Fox News.
The victim's father, Barry Kalfin, told WPBF that he brought the tape to police last week to seek justice for the beating.
"They wanted her to bleed on tape so they could put it up on YouTube," he said. "The kids put it up there -- they promote it. They are want-to-be gang members, and at this point, it is ridiculous."
After watching the video, police arrested Alter on Wednesday, a week after the fight originally occurred.
Police said they arrested Marcus Rainford a day after the brawl, also accusing him of beating Kalfin with a bat during the fight. Investigators said that incident was not caught on tape.
Rainford is charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
Kalfin was taken to a local hospital to repair her wounds. She received five stitches below her eye and two staples on the top of her head.
Kalfin said there is a pounding in her head and that she can barely sleep at night because of the beating. She said she hopes by speaking out, others won't suffer.
"I don't want there to be another Rachel like me, and I don't want there to be another kid that gets beat up and the world knows about it," she said.
Alter and Rainford were expected to make their first appearance in court Thursday.
