A lawn worker is dead after allegedly being struck by lightning Thursday.

Miami-Dade police said David Canales was standing next to a tree at 15000 S.W. 62nd Ave. when lightning struck the tree and then struck him.

The 44-year-old man was hit while working on the front lawn of a home in the affluent suburb of Pinecrest about 1 p.m., said Lt. Elkin Sierra, a spokesman for Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

Canales was hit by "dry" lightning, which means it was not raining at the time the lightning struck.

Canales was taken to South Miami Hospital where he died.
