Police: Mom Waited Days To Help Burned Daughter
2-Year-Old Burned Monday; Didn't Get Treatment Until Thursday

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- A 27-year-old mother accused of failing to provide her badly burned 2-year-old daughter with medical attention for more than three days was arrested Thursday.
Fort Lauderdale police have charged Benjana Genestant with one count of child neglect for failing to render aid to her child at the appropriate time.
According to police, Genestant heated a glass of water inside a microwave Monday and placed it on top of a counter, from which her 3-year-old child grabbed the glass and accidentally poured it on the 2-year-old. Police and fire-rescue officials didn't receive reports of a burned child until Thursday about 9 p.m., police said.
The 2-year-old was taken to Broward General Medical Center for treatment. She suffered second-degree burns to more than 12 percent of her body, including the face, chest and abdomen areas, police said.
"The photos of this child, they speak volumes of the pain that she's in," Fort Lauderdale police Sgt. Frank Sousa said.
A family friend told Local 10 that she noticed the burns Monday and asked Genestant to take her daughter to the hospital, but was told the family would take care of it themselves.
"I believe maybe it was more out of fear than anything for not contacting us," Sousa said.
