Suspect Named In Security Guard's Shooting Death

20-Year-Old Wanted In Fatal Shooting At Metrorail Station

POSTED: Tuesday, August 28, 2007

Police on Monday released the identity of a 20-year-old man wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of a security guard at a metrorail station last year.

Edward Curry is accused of killing Chermaine Joseph-Quetel at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. metrorail station in October 2006.

For the past 10 months, Miami-Dade police had wrangled with the vague description of the shooter until recently, when a tip was called in to Crime Stoppers. Police said the tip helped identify Curry as the gunman who killed the wife and mother of five.

Joseph-Quetel's husband, who is also a security guard, was on duty patrolling the parking garage across from the metrorail station on the night she was killed. He received a garbled hand-held radio message from his wife that she had been shot and ran over to help her, but it was too late.

Police said patrons at the station, located at 6300 N.W. 27th Ave., saw Joseph-Quetel patrolling the station by herself about 10:40 p.m. Oct. 29. About two minutes later, patrons heard a gunshot and saw a man run away.

Police said Joseph-Quetel was a five-year veteran of Alanis Security, which contracts with Miami-Dade County to provide security at metrorail stations.

The metrorail station where Joseph-Quetel worked and was killed now has several posters detailing the crime and stating that a $21,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest in her shooting.

"We're now hoping that the community can take a good look at him and, hopefully, come forward with his whereabouts so we can get this gentleman off the streets," Miami-Dade police Detective Mario Rachid said.

Police said Curry is known to frequent the area of Northwest 75th Street and 17th Avenue. Police said they have been unable to locate Curry, whose juvenile court records show that he has a criminal history.

Curry is considered armed and dangerous. Police said he goes by the street name of "Cool Pop" and that his last known address was in Miami Gardens, just blocks away from Joseph-Quetel's home.

Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
