The fall that killed a 12-year-old girl Tuesday may have been the result of horseplay in the hallway of the middle school.

Pateesha Clinch died after suffering an injury to her head at Westview Middle School in northwest Miami-Dade County, according to Miami-Dade police.

Between 11:15 and 11:25 a.m. Tuesday, an incident occurred at the school involving students, according to police.

When fire-rescue units responded, they found Clinch unconscious and transported her to Jackson Memorial Hospital North, where she was pronounced dead.

"She was a good person, you know," said Buck Jones, a family friend. "I don't understand how a person that young can just leave so fast."

It has not been released how the sixth-grade student died, but witnesses told Local 10 Clinch got caught between two seventh-grade boys who were "horseplaying," while she was on her way to class. She hit her head against a concrete wall, classmates said.

Briana Green said she was there when Clinch fell.

"She looked kind of pale and so I lifted her up so she could get some air," said Green.

The school was placed on lockdown after the incident. Police said no weapons appeared to have been involved.

"She was a very sweet little girl," said Earnest Hamilton, Clinch's uncle. "Y'all just keep us in your prayers, please."

Miami police said the autopsy on the girl was completed Wednesday and according to investigators the medical examiner did not observe any visible trauma to the victim's body.

Additional studies are being conducted, but based on the results Miami police do not anticipate any arrests.

Miami-Dade schools spokesman John Schuster said grief counselors were at the middle school Wednesday to talk to anyone who needed help coping with the girl's death.
