Burglars Can Use Key To Open Almost Any Door
Lock Bumping Technique Newest Form Of Entry For Burglars
POSTED: Tuesday, October 9, 2007
MIAMI -- A locked door no longer keeps homes safe from criminals. These days they have the key to get in.
A new technique called lock bumping has hit the streets. For a few bucks, burglars can purchase a key that will unlock almost every door.
It's simply filed down in a certain way and then tapped with a hammer. Locksmith Stephen Braswell couldn't believe the simplicity.
"These are so easy to get, and that's what's scary," Braswell told Local 10's Sasha Andrade.
He was so concerned he showcased the technique for homeowners in Hialeah. Jennifer Ramon watched in shock.
"I think that's horrible -- a complete violation of privacy," she said.
Braswell said heavy-duty expensive locks couldn't get bumped and are absolutely worth the investment. He also advises families to get their home assessed by a locksmith.
