Japanese Technique Straightens Curly Hair

Local Stylist Uncurls Even The Curliest Hair

If you have curly or wavy hair you know how unruly it can be -- spending hours to straighten it only to walk outside and have the humidity destroy it in seconds.

Now there's an amazing new treatment that's literally transforming curly hair into to straight hair and women are crossing continents to come to South Florida to have it done.

Giselle Miranda spends hours on her curly hair, and says "it's the biggest pain in the world.

"I have to go through this whole process of deep conditioning then bring a conditioner in then brushing it out then putting gel in then letting it dry a little bit then putting more products. The amount of money I spend on products is amazing," she said.

So when Miranda heard about something called thermal conditioning she couldn't wait to try it. "I've always wanted straight hair. I think I look much better with straight hair and I've had 28 years of curls and frizz and I want it to end."

So she went to Vincent Scotto of Vincent J salon in Fort Lauderdale, the only location in Florida using the Yuko system a thermal reconditioning process that originated in Japan.

Scotto says the process "works to change the internal structure of the hair … it turns dry frizzy curly hair into straight silky hair. It doesn't turn the hair into relaxed hair -- it literally transforms the hair into straight hair."

Several solutions are put on to strengthen the hair. Scotto says, "What the hair water does is it increases the capacity of your hair to hold moisture. After that we spray on P.P.T. which is a protein that's been chemically altered so that the protein molecules absorb into the hair shaft."

Then a Yuko iron is used to seal the cuticle and lock in the moisture and protein. Just a few strands of hair are ironed at a time. That's why the process can take up to 6 hours.

Scotto currently has a waiting list, and has clients from across the world. "I think our farthest client so far i had a woman come in from Kuwait," he said.

The process will last from 6 months to a year and costs $300 to $500. There are cheaper substitutes but Scotto says Yuko works the best. "Make sure before you have it done that your technician is skilled in the process and that the products that they are using are good products because what could be a miracle could also be a disaster in the wrong hands."

For Giselle, her transformation truly was a miracle. She says she couldn't believe her eyes. She said, "This is like a dream come true! I love that man!"
