Food Bank Already In Need Of Donations

Times Tougher For Feeding Program, CEO Says

The cooperative feeding program in Broward County is used to feeding thousands of people each year, but this year it may have a tough time doing that.

"As we watch the increase in the number of people in need, we're starting to be concerned that a lot of our givers have now become recipients of this type of service," said Marti Forman, the CEO of the Cooperative Feeding Program.

She said the economy is to blame for the increase and the changing face of those in need. They're seeing more baby boomers and elderly people who need help.

Last year, the program fed 81,000 people. That's about 30,000 families, Forman said. This year, it expects to feed hundreds more.

"It's nice that the people do what they do. At least you know there are some kind people in this world," said George Matis, a food recipient.

Forman said while the holidays are usually a busy time in terms of getting donations, this year they cannot afford to wait until the holiday rush.

"All too often we're saying that we can't help and we look at people's faces and we know that the despair and despondency is already there," said Forman.
