FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Drivers could soon have the option of avoiding Interstate 95's frustrating traffic by using a proposed express toll lane. The multimillion dollar project would allow drivers to bypass slower traffic between Fort Lauderdale and Miami.
The Florida Department of Transportation is inviting drivers to voice their opinions on the new proposed High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes at a Toll Rate Rule Development Workshop Monday night.
FDOT said the current HOV system simply doesn't work. With the new proposed HOT lanes, two managed lanes would be available to drivers in each direction instead of the current single HOV lane.
HOT lanes would be entered or exited at points along a 21-mile stretch connecting Fort Lauderdale to downtown Miami:
At the Interstate 595 interchange, between Ives Dairy Road and Hallandale Beach Boulevard.
At the Golden Glades between Northwest 103rd Street and 119th Street.
At the 395 Interchange.
But a roundtrip drive could cost as much as $6, Local 10 reported.
A spokesperson from FDOT said the toll would be reduced late at night and during peak hours it would be higher.
The public meeting is from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Empire Ballroom of the Sheraton Fort Lauderdale Airport at Griffin Road, Dania.
Other workshops are scheduled for Nov. 28 in Miami Shores and Dec. 3 in Dania.
