Police Say Robbery Was Motive Outside School

One person has been charged in the shooting of a Miami Carol City Senior High School teacher.

Miami-Dade police took Patrick Lively, 18, of Miami, into custody Tuesday. Police said they believe Lively shot Sergio Miranda across the street from the school.

According to police, Miranda and another teacher had walked off campus to smoke cigarettes when Lively approached them and demanded their wallets Tuesday. The female with Miranda said she didn't have a wallet and ran. When Miranda turned to walk away, Lively shot him striking him in the back, police said.

Three schools and an apartment complex were immediately placed on lockdown after the 11:30 a.m. shooting.

The lockdown was lifted at 3 p.m. for Barbara Hawkins Elementary and Carol City senior, middle and elementary schools.

Miranda was transported by ambulance to Jackson Memorial Hospital after being shot in the upper torso. Miami-Dade fire-rescue Lt. Eddy Ballester said his injuries were serious but that he was conscious and talking to paramedics.

Investigators said an anonymous tip led them to the apartment of Denise Wallace, the mother of suspect Patrick Lively.

"They hit my son. Why did they hit my son?" said Wallace.

Officers stormed the apartment looking for Lively.

Wallace said police broke dishes and tossed furniture throughout her apartment.

Lively was taken into custody inside of his mother's home Tuesday.

Detectives also recovered a .38-caliber revolver they believe was used in the shooting.

Local 10 caught up with Miranda's family as they arrived home in Hialeah Gardens from the hospital.

His sister asked for privacy and told Local 10's Glenna Milberg in Spanish that Miranda is expected to fully recover from his gunshot wound.

Miranda bought the home earlier this year and had recently brought his parents to live with him from Cuba, Local 10 reported.

Outside the school, students told Local 10 that Miranda was a good teacher.

"He's a real nice teacher," said 11th-grader Alysha Knight, who was in his algebra class in the morning before he was shot.

"He got along with all the kids. Everybody likes him," said Chez Knight, who was in Miranda's class last year.

Lively is charged with attempted armed robbery with a firearm and attempted first-degree murder, according to police.
