Feelings Mixed About 'Tacky' Airport Shirts

MIA Employees Required To Wear Romero Britto-Designed Shirts

POSTED: Friday, November 16, 2007

Employees at Miami International Airport have mixed feelings about a new uniform they'll soon be required to wear.

The final design of the shirts is a scaled-back version of what was presented to the Miami-Dade County commissioners last month. Commissioner Natacha Seijas called the original rendering "tacky" and said she would be "embarrassed. My maid wears better clothes than this shirt."

The shirts, designed by local Brazilian artist Romero Britto, will be worn by hundreds of employees at the airport who will be visible to passengers. A Miami International Airport emblem is embedded in a ray of colors. An image of a palm tree also appears on the front of the shirts.

"I like it," said Jose Abreu, director of the Miami-Dade Aviation Department. "It says we are Miami and we're here to help you."

Abreu told Local 10's Terrell Forney that the change in dress code is part of a bigger plan to color code areas of the airport. The idea is expected to help airline passengers find their terminals quicker and enable them to flag down assistance in the blink of an eye. Everyone from indoor airline employees to outdoor traffic workers would have to wear a form of the new shirts.

"I guess I have no choice," said Clovis Cader, an airport information desk agent.

Hundreds of uniforms have already been ordered and are expected to arrive at MIA by mid-January.
