Luggage Tags Lead Thieves To Homes
Police Advise Against Putting Address On Tag
POSTED: Tuesday, November 20, 2007
MIAMI -- Oh, the joys of holiday travel -- fighting the crowds at the airport, packing everything except the list of restricted items and standing in long lines are all part of the hassles of flying. Now, there's one more thing to add to the list.
Don't put home addresses on luggage tags. That bit of advice might protect one's home from common thieves who, according to police, spot the tag, get an address and break into the home knowing that person is out of town.
"They have everything," said traveler Marcos Molina. "They have your address, a phone number. They can even phone ahead of time to see if you're home."
Coral Gables police said it can be a holiday nightmare, but prevention is easy.
Put a family member's address on the tag (make sure they're going to be home first), use a business address or a P.O. Box.
"I do put my phone number in big numbers and my name, but I never, never, never put my address," said traveler Sandra Gellar.
