Attorney Says Intruder Shot Football Player

Police Not Releasing Much Information During Investigation

POSTED: Monday, November 26, 2007
UPDATED: 5:57 pm EST November 26,2007

The attorney for Washington Redskins free safety Sean Taylor said an intruder kicked in the door of the football player's home Monday morning, then shot Taylor.

Attorney Richard Sharpstein said that Taylor, his girlfriend and Taylor's 18-month-old daughter were in the bedroom of Taylor's home on Old Cutler Road when Taylor heard noises in the living room.

Sharpstein said that Taylor went to investigate the noises and was carrying a machete that he keeps in the bedroom. The intruder kicked in the door, then shot twice, hitting Taylor in the leg, the attorney said. Taylor lost a significant amount of blood because the bullet hit the 24-year-old's femoral artery, according to Sharpstein.

The attorney said that Taylor was in the intensive care unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital and is unconscious.

Miami-Dade police have not released any detailed information about the shooting except to say that he was shot in the lower extremities and was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center.

Miami-Dade police went to Taylor's home at 18050 Old Cutler Road in Palmetto Bay after receiving a call from a woman around 1:30 a.m. The woman was later identified by investigators as Taylor's girlfriend.

Taylor was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center around 2 a.m., according to police.

A family friend, who did not want to be identified, told Local 10's Rad Berky that Taylor was shot twice.

Lt. Nancy Perez of Miami-Dade police said there were several family members inside the home at the time of the shooting and that investigators are interviewing them to try to determine what happened, but Sharpstein did not confirm that any other family members were in the home.

Additionally, Local 10 learned that someone attempted to break in to Taylor's home more than a week ago, according to a police report issued after that incident.

Crime scene investigators were seen leaving with bags of evidence collected inside the home, Berky said.

Taylor's Plea Bargain

Last June, Taylor agreed to a plea bargain in court on charges he brandished a weapon at people he suspected had stolen some all terrain vehicles from his home. Taylor agreed to 18 months probation.

Police have not said if a gun was found in the home Monday or if they believe there is any connection to the previous incident involving Taylor.

Taylor is in his fourth season with the Redskins. He leads the team with five interceptions but has missed the last two games with a knee injury. The 212-pound Taylor played in his first Pro Bowl in 2006.
