Autistic Boy Stabbed In Eyes; Aunt Charged

Police Say Woman Spoke About Biblical References, Devil

POSTED: Monday, December 3, 2007

The aunt of a 14-year-old autistic boy who was stabbed in both eyes with a dagger will be charged with attempted first-degree murder, Lauderhill police said Saturday.

Lisa Babington is accused of stabbing her nephew, Edward Babington, at their home on Northwest 53rd Street about 10 p.m. Thursday. Authorities weren't notified until the next day.

Police said Lisa Babington entered the bedroom where Edward Babington was sleeping and stabbed him in both eyes, speaking about biblical references and the devil. Police said she then stabbed herself in one eye sometime during the night.

According to police, Lisa Babington's mother, Stella Babington, observed the attack. She told investigators Lisa Babington threatened her not to call the police or emergency services, and she said she didn't want to get her daughter in trouble, police said.

Police said Lisa Babington then left the home and went to boyfriend Jason Willoughby's home in Pompano Beach. When she arrived there, she was wearing a towel on her head, which covered her wounded eye.

Lisa Babington told Willoughby she wanted to go to church to read the Bible, but she didn't specify which church. As he was driving her to find a church, Lisa Babington told him to take her back to Lauderhill, police said.

When Willoughby went into the master bedroom and found Edward Babington bleeding from his eyes, he left the home and dialed 911, police said. The call was placed about 10:30 a.m. Friday.

The boy was transferred by ambulance from Broward General Medical Center to one of the world's premier eye institutes at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.

"The child is autistic; we understand he can't speak, and now we understand he won't be able to see," said Lauderhill police Lt. Rick Rocco.

Police said they were trying to determine what charges, if any, might be filed against Stella Babington for failing to alert authorities.
