Man Crushed, Body Severed At Landfill Garage

Remote Arms On Back Of Garbage Truck Caused Accident, Investigators Say

UPDATED: 1:32 pm EST January 3, 2008

A maintenance worker died Thursday when his body was crushed and severed during an accident inside a landfill garage, authorities said.

Deerfield Beach Fire Rescue paramedics were called to Waste Management Incorporated at 3831 N. Powerline Road shortly before 9 a.m.

Raul Figueroa, 45, had worked at the company for seven years as a mechanic, Broward Sheriff's Office detectives told Local 10.

Figueroa was working alone and standing on the side of the truck between the cab and the main part of the truck when the remote arm crushed and severed his body. A co-worker found him at 9 a.m., but they are not sure what time the accident happened.

"The maintenance worker was making repairs to a garbage truck when the remote arms on the back of the truck retracted, crushing the man under the arms against the truck," said Gary Fernays, the Deerfield Beach Fire Rescue public information officer.

Figueroa was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Broward County Medical Examiner was expected to arrive at the scene. BSO is calling Figueroa's death accidental.

Waste Management is not commenting about the incident.
