Half-Ton Of Marijuana Seized In Boat Chase
27-Year-Old Bahamian National Arrested

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. -- Gunfire, a high-seas chase and a boat filled with drugs had all the makings of a "Miami Vice" script. However, all of the events played out in real life on Super Bowl Sunday when a half-ton of marijuana was seized from a 26-foot powerboat.
The vessel, named "Pursuit," was cruising waters just off Bay Harbor Island when a police marine patrol unit tried to pull over the boat. Instead of stopping, the boat rammed the police unit and tried to flee officers, police said.
One of the men on board was armed with what appeared to be a rifle. A marine officer with the North Miami Police Department fired at least two shots at the men but did not hit them.
Things came to a crashing end on Keystone Island in North Miami when the powerboat slammed into a dock.
"They were approaching the dock, they crashed into it and they took off," said Isabel Lago, who lives next door to where the boat crashed. "They left the engine running."
Once detectives boarded the abandoned boat, they found 1,000 pounds of marijuana that was being stored in large duffle bags. The drugs carry an estimated street value of $800,000.
Police launched a massive search by air and ground for the two men, but it was only after detectives scaled back their efforts that they made their first arrest.
Jeremy Edgecombe, a 27-year-old Bahamian national, was arrested after he was spotted trying to walk out of the gated community that investigators spent hours searching. North Miami police detectives said he fit the description of one of the men seen fleeing the boat.
Police took Edgecombe to the North Miami Police Department for questioning, but he was uncooperative, said a police department representative. He is charged with trafficking and resisting arrest without violence. A second person was still being sought.
