POMPANO BEACH, Fla. -- Broward Sheriff's Office deputies rescued an emaciated pooch from a hot, locked vehicle in Pompano Beach on Wednesday morning after receiving an anonymous tip.
The tipster, concerned that it was getting hot outside, said the dog was left inside a pickup truck overnight.
Deputies responded to the condominium complex at 2639 N. Riverside Drive and located the black 1977 Chevrolet Silverado parked directly in the sunlight. Deputies said the vehicle was hot to the touch, even though the windows were slightly open. Deputies tried to locate the owner before forcing their way inside the truck.
The white- and brown-spotted, 8-year-old German shorthaired pointer was dirty, shaking, showing signs of dehydration and appeared to be malnourished, according to the BSO.
There was no food or water in the truck and deputies smelled a strong odor of urine inside the truck. Deputies tried giving the dog food and water, but its body rejected it. Animal control workers responded to the scene and transported the dog to a nearby animal hospital.
Deputies located the dog's owner, John Dibella, 28, of Inman, S.C.
Dibella told deputies he had to leave his dog in the truck for the last four days because dogs are not allowed in the condominium. Dibella said he hadn't moved his truck to a shaded area because he overslept that morning.
Deputies also recovered several rifles, shotguns and a large amount of ammunition from the truck, according to the BSO. Other residents said the truck had been parked in the same spot for days, but they were afraid to say anything because of the firearms found in the truck.
Dibella was charged with one felony count of animal cruelty.
